What is wrong with my Okame cherry tree? #787000

Asked April 16, 2022, 11:23 AM EDT

This year my cherry tree only partially bloomed. In all previous years it was perfectly fine, full bloom, beautiful. We've had the tree for over 15 years with no problem.  Last year we had a lot of spotted lantern fly in the neighborhood.  The bark looks fine, no obvious disease, and the branches which did not bloom now have no leaves but can bend so don't appear dead.  Can you help?  This tree has sentimental value as as my late husband and I planted it.

Expert Response

Thank you for your question. There are several problems that occur in flowering cherry trees that include brown rot, black knot, leaf spot, and others that might prevent full bloom. You might consider bringing a sample of an affected branch to your extension office. If the problem can't be diagnosed there, the sample can be sent to the lab for study and some answers.

An alternative would be to consider consulting a professional, licensed arborist near you. A tree professional would be able to see first hand your Okame cherry in its environment and give you advice on treatment.
