Clumping Grass #786423

Asked April 11, 2022, 10:11 AM EDT

What grass or weed is this? It really likes my sandy soil and I'd like to have it grow everywhere.

Wicomico County Maryland

Expert Response

Grass ID is challenging, and we don't recognize this as any one particular species from the photos, though it does appear to be one of the typical turfgrass species used in Maryland (as opposed to one of the common grassy weeds). Are these tufts of grass growing in part of a larger lawn, where they look distinctly different from the rest of the grass? Turf-type tall fescue (TTTF) is the predominant lawn grass used in Maryland, though in warmer counties, Zoysia is popular as well. Additives in mixed TTTF seed or sod include a bit of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass.

You can try using either of the turfgrass ID keys linked below. Each publication includes a guide to what the different structures you need to examine look like; you might need a magnifying glass to see them clearly enough.
  • Turfgrass Identification - Ohio State (PDF)
  • Cool-season Turfgrass ID - Penn State
This key won't include zoysia, since that's a warm-season grass, but zoysia probably hasn't greened-up yet for the season (even in the warmer MD counties), so it's unlikely to be the species pictured.

The other thing growing in my yard is chickweed and other weeds common in Pittsville, Wicomico County. This grass is really happy and I’d like to get more of it to grow. I did spread some tall fescue grass from home depot but it didn’t do well in my sandy soil. I’ll attempt to identify what I have. Thanks.
