Identifying sapling #785939

Asked April 05, 2022, 8:09 PM EDT

Can you tell what this tree is? It is in an area with many cherry trees.

Franklin County Kentucky

Expert Response

I'm unable to identify the tree because the photos that with the buds are out of focus.  If you'd can submit an in-focus photo of the bud at the tip of the plant, I'd be better able to identify.  To take in-focus pictures of leaves and twigs, place a blank piece of paper right behind the object and then take a picture.

Thank you for your response!  I took better photos of the buds and have attached them here.  I'm hoping they will be desirable trees to plant!

It's a bit of an awkward time for tree and shrub id.  The leaves are not fully out, and the buds are not in their normal shape as they're swelling up.  However, I think that is a Dogwood species (Cornus sp).  Not likely flowering dogwood (Cornus floridia), but one of the shrubby dogwoods, maybe Grey Dogwood (Cornus racemosa).   When the it fully leaves out and if it flowers, I would compare it to photos of grey dogwood.  I suggest referring to an University extension, botanical garden, or forest service website for accurate pictures to compare. Example: https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/cornus-racemosa/
