Thunderhead #785618

Asked March 30, 2022, 10:35 PM EDT

Hi - I believe the plant is called a thunderhead. Starting in December I noticed the tips of the needles were browning. The plant has been in the container pot for 2 years. I'm hoping you can assess the cause of the browning and advise what action steps are needed to save the plant. Thanks!

Hi! The potted shrub appears to be a Thunderhead, a variety of Japanese Black Pine. You mentioned that it has been in a container pot for two years – I would first advise repotting it in a larger pot. This will allow you to check on the roots and fix any drainage issues that may be occurring in the current pot. Refreshing the soil could help replenish any depleted nutrients, which happens more frequently with container plants than those in the ground. Good news, the candles (buds for new needle growth) appear fine, so the shrub is likely to leaf out normally. The singed tips may be normal winter damage and should eventually shed on their own.
