Shimmery bluish mildew in soil #785383

I left leaves around my yews for insulation over the winter because I gave them a hard rejuvenation cut last spring. There’s a shimmery bluish mildew in the soil now and it took on a strange texture like the surface of the moon. It doesn’t appear there’s any mildew on the yews. In a panic I removed the leaves today. However I put compost from my brother around the yews during the summer. I was careful to keep it away from the canes. I read that compost could cause this? Thank you in advance for any information and advice you can offer.

This looks like frost to me. We had a good warm up which leads to some soil heaving. Once it is thawed, the moisture in the soil can appear like these photos. Give it a couple of weeks to see if it goes away on it's own. If not, please submit a sample to the MSU Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic. Here is a web-site where you can get more information. https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/submit-samples/
I had never heard of soil heaving. I found a video in which the hard chunks of frozen soil looked similar to mine. Everything already looks better today with the rain and warmer temps. The raised up moon-looking soil has laid back down. Thank you! My yews are recovering from a hard pruning and I was worried that mold had gotten in the soil.
