How to trim this apple tree #784773

Asked March 22, 2022, 11:51 AM EDT

Hi, I am looking for advice on how to trim my apple tree. I've attached 3 pictures. I believe this is a Honeycrisp tree, but it could also be a Zestar - I can't remember which one for sure. It is approximately 15-18 ft. tall. I want to know the proper way to prune this tree to get the optimal amount of apples. I've had apples the past couple of years, but not very many for a tree this size. Also, is right now a good time to prune it? Thank you, Steve

With the weather warming up it is just on the end cusp of time to prune an apple tree. This is typically done beginning in February until temperatures are beginning to go above freezing. I have attached a link below that has three YouTube videos with instruction on apple pruning. One basic rule is to pull out any branches that cross over each other. Use sharp, clean tools and make cuts close to the where the branches intersect the main trunk. The videos will be very helpful in understanding other specifics.

I reviewed the videos.  One last question.  The tree seems to be growing taller and not really wider.  Would you top off the tree?  It seems like there were apples on the top branches that went straight up.  By removing these would it produce more fruit on the lower branches going out to the the sides?

I would highly suggest not topping off the tree. This can cause long term challenges with form.
