Arizona Cypress Issue #783392

Asked March 07, 2022, 10:23 AM EST

We have an Arizona Cypress tree, about 7 years old, that is randomly turning limbs brown within a day or two. I checked for bugs and galls but saw nothing. The soil is sandy and I have been watering it periodically since it has not been raining much. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? Pictures are attached.

Expert Response

Hi Darryl,
I believe that is a fungal disease, Cercospora blight, based on what I can see from the photo.  I have included a link here to Texas A&M plant disease handbook (which includes other conditions as well):
https://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/library/landscaping/diseases-of-italian-cypress-and-related-species-in-texas/
This is the treatment for Cercospora blight (copied from above):

Management

Treat Cercospora blight with copper-based fungicides and other types of commercially available fungicides. Valuable plantings may warrant the use of chemical controls, applied promptly upon proper diagnosis of the disease. Multiple applications may be necessary during the summer, particularly during rainy periods. In Texas, begin applications in May and continue them every 2 to 3 weeks as long as conditions are conducive to disease development.

Hope this helps and thanks for taking such good care of your trees.
