Rhodie leaf droop #781365

Asked February 06, 2022, 3:38 PM EST

Hello, is this droop a symptom of a problem I could remedy? This shrub is ten feet tall and standing next to another that doesn’t look like this. Thanks so much, Kate

Expert Response

The drooping of the leaves on your rhododendron is most likely not caused by an insect or disease. This time of year, when the temperatures drop and it is dry and windy, the leaves will begin to curl and start to droop. It is the plant’s way of reducing water loss from the leaves. Some rhododendrons seem to be more prone to this problem than others, but once the weather warms in the spring the rhododendron should recover.

If your rhododendron continues to have this problem once the weather changes or you find you have other questions, please feel free to contact us again or your local Extension office. Dear Jan,
Thank you so much for your assurances that my rhodie is just doing what rhodies do and the likely reason it’s neighbor isn’t also suffering has more to do with its variety’s susceptibilities than anything else.
Thank you so much for your generous  work benefiting the gardening community and our beloved planet.
Sincerely,
Kate
