Asked January 24, 2022, 11:46 PM EST

Do you need any licenses to start a hobby farm in Alaska? Do you need a business license or anything? Thanks

For the most part you do not need a license for a farm in Alaska.  There are some exceptions for the use of restricted pesticides, food safety, etc.  Here is a link to the Alaska Division of Agriculture for more information.

Hi Joshua,

You donʼt mention if you plan to sell produce or other products from your farm, but if you do, youʼll need to get a business license (https://www.commerce.alaska.gov/web/cbpl/BusinessLicensing.aspx) and you should check with your local city offices to see if you need to register with them for sales taxes or other reasons.

Finally, if your "hobby" ends up more financially successful than you thought (we know you can do it!), and you start making more than about $25,000/year from selling produce, youʼll want to look at the Alaska Produce Safety information (https://dec.alaska.gov/eh/vet/produce/) for potential requirements. Even if you stay at the hobby level, a Produce Safety Training is a good idea. Youʼll see on that site that thereʼs a training coming up in February (there are 4-8 each year).

All the best to you on your farm!
