Raised vegetable garden advice #780746

Asked January 24, 2022, 6:44 PM EST

I am building a raised garden for growing vegetables and I want your recommendations for building materials. My impulse is to use 2 x 10 rough cedar. When I went to the lumber yard, I was told that the Wolmanized Outdoor wood is safe for use in the garden. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for your question, Glenn.  Wolmanized wood is not recommended for raised bed gardens (https://www.clp-inc.com/wolmanized-wood-versus-pressure-treated-wood/).  This article explains the variety of treatments for wood:  https://cybercemetery.unt.edu/archive/allcollections/<personal data hidden>315/http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/documnts/techline/whats-in-that-pressure-treated-wood.pdf

This Extension article lists the safest methods to ensure that chemicals do not leach into vegetables, regardless of what structure you have:  https://extension.umd.edu/resource/safety-materials-used-building-raised-beds

I hope this is helpful.  Good luck!
