Prepping for new and previously sodded areas. #780743

Asked January 24, 2022, 5:51 PM EST

If I spray a weeded area now with RoundUp, how soon can I safely lay sod over the sprayed area? Is now a good time to use a lawn roller to help level existing lawn and previously sodded areas? Thank You for previous helpful replies.

Hello,

Roundup inactivates in the soil very quickly.  To be safe, I would wait a week.

However, I would not be laying sod now as the temperatures are too cold.  I would wait until mid April.  Therefore, you could spray Roundup now and wait to see what dies and respray the plants that did not die or that germinated later.  This process will give you a much cleaner seed bank.  Although if you are laying sod over the area, the sod will kill any new germinating plants so use your judgement on whether it makes sense to spray again closer to the date of sodding.

I would not roll the lawn in cold weather.  I would wait until the end of March or early April and be sure there is not a late frost on the day you roll it.

Good luck.
