It is too early to start your tomato seeds. A common mistake is to sow seeds too early and then attempt to hold the seedlings back under poor light or improper temperature ranges. This can result in tall, weak, spindly plants that do not perform well in the garden. Sow tomatoes about 6-7 weeks before you expect to plant them outdoors. Crops are listed as being warm or cold season. Tomatoes are a warm season crop and are planted outdoors after all danger of frost is past. Cool season crops can withstand frost and may be planted outside much earlier.
Here is our page on starting seeds indoors. This includes growing indoors under grow lights (there is seldom enough light from natural windows), containers and growing medium, planting, care, etc.
and our vegetable planting calendar which includes a timeline for planting seeds indoors and transplanting outside.
