I need suggestions for a soil test. #780683

Asked January 23, 2022, 3:30 PM EST

I am planning on planting a hedgerow on my residential lot in Lake Oswego, OR in Clackamas County. The land was previously landscaped with shrubs, including Rhododendrons and Camellias. Several years ago there were two cherry trees. I have removed all of the existing plantings and I am starting from bare soil. I downloaded Publication EC 628 about collecting the soil sample. Thanks. Now I need to know: 1) Where to send the sample. Can you recommend a economical, reputable and reliable lab as close to Lake Oswego, OR as possible? 2) What tests should I order? This will be a hedgerow of primarily Oregon native plants to facilitate insects, amphibians, pollinators and birds. There will be no human consumption of any of the fruits etc.

Expert Response

Greetings,

Thank you for reaching out to Extension.

Below are three resources to guide your soil testing process. We are not able to recommend one lab over another, but the guide will help to make a decision. OSU is one of the options, and often people select a Lab in Oregon or close to where they live. It is always recommended to talk to the lab about your vision so they can offer input on analysis.

A List of Analytical Labs Serving Oregon - This list of labs is updated every few years. Before choosing a lab, call for current prices and procedures for mailing the sample. Labs will often have packages of several analyses for a lower cost than individual tests.

Soil Test Interpretation Guide - Soil tests results may look a little foreign! This guide will help sort out the key points. For further information about specific soil results, contact the local Extension Service office or a private consultant.
