how long are eggs good for #780619

Asked January 22, 2022, 11:16 AM EST

A guy I know who sells eggs at the farmers market also sells them at his auto repair store. He said he has some duck eggs and chicken eggs today that were laid 3 weeks ago. I have bought eggs from him before and they were very good. I told him I thought 3 weeks was a little too old for eggs. He said they keep 5 weeks. If I buy them today and used them within a week would that be ok?

Expert Response

Hi,
According to Colorado state University Extension,

"Eggs should be collected, cleaned and refrigerated as soon as possible to maintain quality and safety.

  • Eggs stored in a carton in the refrigerator should hold their optimal quality for at least four weeks."
