Expert Response

Greetings,

there's not a single alternative to glyphosate (active ingredient in RoundUp) that is risk-free and effective. Better understanding what weeds or unwanted plants you're dealing with, and your priorities for your garden space, would help us suggest alternatives to conventional herbicides that make sense for you. Would you mind sharing some details and/or up-close photos of the weeds you hope to get rid of?

Depending on the weeds and garden priorities, the solutions may vary and could include a combination of hand removel, strategic management to reduce weeds before they start, organic-labeled herbicides, and more. Creative alternatives like using poultry to graze weeds, or flame weeding, can work in some situations. Some people choose to avoid conventionl herbicides in areas like a food garden or lawn used by pets and kids, but use them in other locations like on cut stumps of weedy trees or in landscaped areas where an HOA or local code dictates a groomed look.
