Pruning Pink Lemonade blueberry bushes #780595

Asked January 21, 2022, 4:19 PM EST

I am a seasoned home grower of northern highbush blueberries and I think I have pruning of those down pat. However, the different growth habit of my "Pink Lemonade" blueberries has me a bit baffled. Apart from general shaping and a little bit of thinning, are there any tips I need to know for pruning this variety? Mine are about 8 years old and are productive but I rarely get any new canes emerging (same with my northern highbush ones, sadly). Am asking because I couldn't find any useful YouTube videos on this type of blueberry.

Hello,

Here are instructions for growing blueberries: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec1304/html

Pink Lemonade is a rabbiteye variety and grow a bit smaller than northern highbush blueberies.

To encourage new growth, follow the pruning and fertilizing instructions on the publication.

For pruning, remove several of the oldest (largest, grey in color) canes at the base to let in more light and encourage new canes to develop. Add fertilizer per the instructions to get about 1 foot of new growth on the tips of established canes.

These steps will also help your northern highbush varieties.
