Thornless Gooseberry #780583

Asked January 21, 2022, 2:11 PM EST

Is there a truly thornless Gooseberry? If so, can it be planted in Michigan?

Macomb County Michigan

Expert Response

'Pixwell' and 'Captivator' varieties are marketed as nearly thornless and could grow in Macomb County. The thorns serve as a natural defense mechanism against wildlife and some insect pests. Breeding thorns completely out may be easier for the gardener but can introduce other risks for the plant.

If you plan to grow the gooseberries on areas in Northern or Western Michigan, a permit is required from MDARD and you can only plant white-pine blister resistant varieties.
