Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Bruce.

I found information about your question on nutritional sites.  One site states that red and concord grapes are healthier because " red grapes and Concord grapes are higher in flavonoids and phytonutrients, including resveratrol,"
said Rumsey. https://www.livescience.com/54581-grapes-nutrition.html

Another site states that black grapes are the most healthy and are sweeter: http://www.differencebetween.net/science/nature/difference-between-black-and-red-grapes/

I hope this is the information you are looking for. Thank you for contacting OSU Extension and feel free to contact us if you have other questions.

Sincerely,

Thank  you, Susan.

The sites helped confirm what I was trusting was correct.   I need to find and plant dark black grapes.

Are you allowed to provide a list of potential vendors to buy the needed plants?

Also, I want to do it right….  How about soil testing sources?

Info on placement - full sun? partial shade?         trellis?   fertilizer and mulching?     Best prevention of molds, fungi, “rust”, insect damage?

I really appreciate your attention and expertise.

Hi again,  We can't really advise you where to shop specifically, but I can recommend that you go to a well-respected nursery as opposed to a big box store. If you go on-line, check their feedback ratings.

I commend you for thinking about a soil test.  Certainly that is a first step. Are you close to an OSU extension?  Our office has kits for $10 and they send them out. The extension agents should explain what all the information in the test means.  In Washington County, the extension office is

This following OSU link has probably more information than you need.... it seems to cover most steps, including which varieties are best for Ohio.
https://ohiograpeweb.cfaes.ohio-state.edu/grape-growing

The following link discusses grape pests. There is a list of pests in the left hand column and it may seem overwhelming, but for each pest they give advice:

https://ohiograpeweb.cfaes.ohio-state.edu/ipm/insects/grape-phylloxera

This next site has when to plant (spring is best - see the middle of the article) and how to prune and attach to a cordon or trellis and how to fertilize. It doesn't discuss mulch at length, but lists mulching as a step:

As for mildew on grapes, see https://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/plpath-fru-37

I hope this information helps you succeed in your exciting project!  Let us know if we can help again.
