Sow bugs in our home #780143

Asked January 12, 2022, 5:24 PM EST

We have a townhome in Newport. On the first floor, we keep finding little piles of sowbug carcasses. They are along the edge of our slate flooring by the wood baseboards. I clean them up only to find more the next time we come over. Can you tell me something I might try to get rid of them? Thank you in advance. Louann

Expert Response

Hi Louann:

Thanks for your question about controlling sowbugs, also known as pillbugs, and from my childhood, "rollie-pollies."

Sowbugs thrive in moist environments. You know from personal experience how successful they are here in coastal Oregon!

Take a look at this resource from the Pacific Northwest Pest Management Handbooks Nuisance and household pests-Pillbug and sowbug. Your main strategy will be to minimize wet and moist areas in and around your home and to seal entrances and windows. From this resource, drying can be accomplished by removing organic matter, such as grass clippings, leaf litter, and bedding mulches from moist areas and to properly ventilate basements and crawl spaces.

Here is another super helpful resource from Misfit Gardener How Do You Get Rid Of Sow Bugs? that covers non-chemical control methods, including trapping methods using potatoes, melon, and rolled up newspaper. The concept is sowbugs will congregate in your "traps" and then you dispose of them in an area far enough away that they won't return. You can also soak them in a bucket of soapy water.

I hope this information is helpful and successful at controlling those sometimes pesky rollie-pollies! You can contact me directly should you have any questions. Let me know how it goes!
