ants in January??? #779935

Asked January 08, 2022, 12:47 PM EST

I have so far found 7 ants in the last few days in the 2nd floor of my house. They look like small black carpenter ants, about 3/8ths " long. My attic has condensation issues, insufficient ventilation that seemingly cannot be corrected. My guess is that the recent extreme cold is driving them into warmer areas of house. No photos, I've swatted them too fast. Should I panic? What to do?

Expert Response

Hi,

First of all, don’t panic; it’s not uncommon to have ants come inside in cold weather.
I can’t identify your ants, but perhaps you can using this information from the U: https://extension.umn.edu/insects-infest-homes/ants#ant-castes-41460

There are control methods discussed in the article. I would try using a bait positioned close to where you’ve seen the ants. Hopefully, they will ingest and take back to the nest. If you see an increasing number, you might want to consider a professional exterminator.

Happy New Year!
