lawn grass #778730

Asked December 04, 2021, 10:14 PM EST

Please help me with what is this stuff in my lawn. It kind of looks like grass, but is thicker, higher (so mows differently) and grows out with prickly looking (but not prickly) extensions. The extensions often have a blonder-than-green look. I live in Millersburg, so flat, hot sunny in summer, rain in winter, Willamette Valley clay (so not great drainage). Photos taken in November. My questions are 1) what is it, and 2) who do I do to get rid of it. Thank you!

Expert Response

This is bentgrass.  The thicker density and extension look is the results of stoloniferous (above ground later stems) growth habit. The only way to truly remove this grass is with spot application of a non-selective herbicide like round-up.  You will need to re-seed or sod after these spot applications.  This grass has a tendency to return because the herbicides don't kill all of the stolons. Control will ultimately require repeated applications and seeding.
