It's difficult to tell strictly from the silhouette, but if this photo was taken in this region, it's likely a northern pin oak or Kentucky coffee tree. Seeing the leaves or bark would help make a better identification.
Thanks. I will, for the purpose of my essay, probably drop the modifier and just describe it as “tree."

It is actually a jigsaw puzzle that may have been purchased at your gift shop about 16 years ago. It is the hardest puzzle I have ever completed. It is mounted on my wall. It took me at least ten days to finish it.
