Hello...
Can you identify the fungus/mold that is growing on my tree? Details are:
Primary concern: Is it possibly unhealthy for plants around it or to animals or me?
Location: Dead cherry tree. Tree was limbed last year and a snag was kept for birds etc.
Recent Activity: Added mulch to the base of the tree last year. Nothing else seems to be currently affected by this fungus/mold.
This stuff wraps around the tree from the base/soil level to the top of the snag.
Exposure: Receives the most sun from the east. Photos were taken on the north (most shaded) side of the tree.

Cara,
Thank you for the close-up images of the fungal growth. That said, to help me
understand the distribution of the fungus, please send two more images,
namely these:
a. The tree, from where it enters the ground to the top.
b. The entire tree and its surroundings.
Then, too, please clarify the status of the affected tree.
1. Is the entire tree dead?
2. Or is the dead portion only the branch that has been retained as a snag?
3. Is the fungus on the sunny side of the tree as well as on the shaded north side?
I look forward to receiving your images.
