off topic? Powder Post Beetles #778431

Asked November 28, 2021, 11:28 AM EST

This is probably not the correct place for this question but perhaps you can direct me to the proper site: I have a wood rack filled with wood infested with powder post beetles. Now that it is colder, is it safe to store this wood in my garage for up to two weeks and in my home for up to three days? Thank you , Dan in Novi

Expert Response

Hello Daniel

This information from Extension on powderpost beetles in household items may help you.

“Powderpost beetles can also be killed by placing smaller items such as wood carvings and picture frames in a deep freeze (0°F) for 3-7 days, again depending on wood thickness. For more on this topic see this article on cold and heat treatments-“

The complete article, below, describes the several types of powderpost beetles and their life cycle, and signs of active colonies.

If these do not give you the information you need, please let me know and I can refer you to our entomologist. The expert will need pictures of the exit holes, and pictures of any powder, larvae or adult insects if possible.

Thank you very much, this was just the information I needed.
