Laurel illness #778414

Asked November 27, 2021, 6:38 PM EST

My two Laurels , I bought in October, have their leaves full of holes. I would like to know if it is the Shot Hole Disease or something else. Do I have to apply a treatment ? If yes, which one? Thank you

Expert Response

The cherry laurel has a very common disease called Cherry Shot Hole which is favored by warm wet spring weather. Foliar symptoms begin in the spring as brown or reddish-brown leaf spots. Later in the season, the infected leaf tissue drops out, leaving small “shot holes.” Remove and dispose of fallen leaves in the fall to reduce overwintering pathogens. New growth in the spring will hide the damaged leaves. Prune out any symptomatic foliage and discard.

Try to adjust tree and shrub spacing and use proper pruning to provide better air circulation to promote faster leaf drying. In most cases, trees and shrubs recover from these diseases and no treatment is necessary. Here is more on cherry shot hole https://extension.umd.edu/resource/cherry-shot-hole-disease

Thank you Marian for your answer,

Your advice (not to treat) confirms what I have read  concerning this disease.

I planted them in October, and they are 1,50 meters from the other one. I will pick up the fallen leaves.

Thanks again,
