You may plant dormant hosta or day lilies in fall as long as the soil is not frozen. Prune off all broken roots. A dead root attached to the plant will rot and invite disease. If the plants look too brittle, dry, or it’s dried out it can’t recover so pitch it. Soak dormant roots in water one hour before planting. Prepare each planting hole with a cone of soil in the middle. Spread the roots over cone with the crown a little below ground level. Press soil firmly around the plant. Then cover the crown with one inch of soil. Water newly planted hosta and day lilies well. Mulch the soil to delay frost heaving.
Plant crocus in the fall before the ground freezes. Crocus are usually planted during September and October. Plant crocus corms 3 to 4 inches deep with the pointy end up. Plant a few inches apart, and plant in groups of 10 or more. Mulch the soil well.
If you want to plant your crocus in a container to winter indoors, place the container in a cool, dark, well-aired spot that won’t get warmer than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, like an unheated basement or garage.
