Japanese Red Maple Bark Damage #778217

Asked November 22, 2021, 11:47 AM EST

Something is damaging the bark on my Japanese Red Maple. I haven't seen any insects or birds or animals on the tree, but I noticed a lot of sap running down from the damaged areas. Could something be chewing the bark to get at the sap?

Expert Response

This looks like sapsucker damage to the trunk.  In general, mature trees/shrubs can tolerate damage from sapsucker feeding and continue to grow fine for years. There is nothing you can do about the sap.

Techniques and choices for control may or may not be effective, and they may just shift the bird’s focus to another part of the tree or a neighboring tree. It is up to you if you want to protect it. Monitor the health of the tree and you can send us photos if you notice more symptoms. Keep your tree watered during dry periods.
