Planting and Mulching Garlic #778216

Asked November 22, 2021, 11:45 AM EST

Hello, I just put together my first raised garden bed, hooray! I just planted Garlic on Saturday. I know I am late on planting but the company said I should be fine with the warm weather we are having. I mulched with hay on top. I was curious, I have a hard plastic sheet at home. Can I put that on top to make a green-house effect? or would a frost cover be beneficial? I am concerned with how late I planted the garlic. Thank you

Expert Response

The straw/hay mulch you placed on top of the garlic after planting is beneficial and is sufficient for overwintering.  Creating a small "greenhouse" with a plastic sheet will likely cause more problems overwintering as it will allow for a wide range of temperature fluctuations throughout the winter months that have the potential of preventing dormancy or bring the garlic out of dormancy prematurely.

Be sure to remove the mulch next spring and the garlic planting will benefit from fertilization in the spring.

Hi Aaron,
I have another question but when I go to the Polk County site, I cannot find where to ask a question to Polk County. The "Ask a Question" button only takes me to ISU.
