Expert Response

The plant is an umbrella tree (Schefflera actinophylla) and is native to rainforests in Australia and New Guinea. In the home, it does best in bright, indirect light near an east, west, or south window.  From the pictures, it looks like it is doing well in the location it is in.

The plants are usually grown as indoor houseplants, which are sometimes kept outdoors during the warm summer season. Outdoors, a schefflera can reach up to 8 feet tall, but indoor plants require pruning to maintain a more manageable size. Trim during spring or summer when the plant is actively growing by removing damaged or wayward growth that detracts from the balance of the plant. To prune, cut stems individually to create a natural appearance and maintain the plant's natural beauty. Make each cut just above the point where a leaf grows from the stem.  Prune the main stalk to a 6- to 12-inch height for a short plant. Make the cut at any height above 6 inches for a taller plant. Repeat for each of the remaining stalks, leaving at least one set of leaves on each stalk.

From your question, it does not appear you want to reduce the size of the plant, but I suggest you do so.  You may be able to propagate new plants from what you prune off.

I found a website with information on Schefflera that you may find helpful.  It is listed below.

I wish you success in maintaining a healthy plant and controlling the size to be manageable.
