Potato diseases #777779

Asked November 14, 2021, 9:51 AM EST

Some of my storage potatoes have this problem. I have only been gardening at this site for 3 years so want to avoid getting a big problem. First, what is it, and second: what can I do? If I put the bad bits in my compost is that I way to spread it? Thanks, Cathy

Expert Response

What variety are you growing?  What geographic region?  When did you plant?  Symptoms resemble heat necrosis or necrosis from a viral infection.

I think these are German Butterballs…here in Lane County, Oregon. Planted probably first half of April. We did have the “heat bubble” event here this summer. Cathy

Indeed you did.  This is likely a result of that heat and could be exacerbated with moisture stress.  It is not a pathogen and will not remain in soil.  Good luck next year!
