Asked November 06, 2021, 7:26 PM EDT

We have found this snake in our garage twice In the last week. My husband has moved it both times into the woods. What type of snake is it? We are in Highland, MI

Oakland County Michigan

Expert Response

Hi, Kathleen.

The snake in the photos look like an eastern milk snake. It is a common snake in Michigan and is completely harmless. They mainly feed on rodents (mice, voles, etc.). For some reason, this snake species is often found in garages and basements (more so than other snake species in the state).

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or would like any additional information.
