Madagascar Palm Propagation #776806

Asked October 30, 2021, 11:04 PM EDT

I have a fully developed mother Madagascar Palm tree. There are 6

offshoots which are hiding the mother plant and have grown quite high, refer to

attached pictures.

I would like to propagate the offshoots without disturbing the mother or

wasting the pups. When two feet hole was dug around one of the big pups, we

couldnt find the roots linking the pup to mother plant.

Kindly assist.

Expert Response

You have to cut the pups and root them separately. You will not find the roots since they usually emerge from buds from the mother plant.

Thanks for the question.

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your valuable advice, much grateful.

Are you suggesting that we should cut the pup from the growth which is outside the ground.  Kindly refer to picture with red line.
Will the plant can then be propagated & will grow?
What will happen to the stem which will remain underground.

Got the image. Do not cut at the red line. You have to dig down and lift out the entire plant. This could be quite the job since the attachment point to the mother plant could be quite deep.

Thanks.

Dear Paul,

Thanks again for your advice, much appreciated.

Are there any visuals to guide us what to expect when digging and how to severe the pup roots from mother plant.

I could not find any images for this particular palm. If you search YouTube there are several videos for harvesting sago palm pups. The technique would be similar.

Thanks

Dear Paul,

We have finally managed to propagate the Madagascar Palm Offshoots.  Attached are some pictures.

Will wait for couple of weeks to find out if its been a successful attempt.
