What type of wasp is this and what is the best way to eliminate them. The picture is the front door.

The Yellowjacket colony is probably deep behind the step, we’ll beyond the reach of a liquid type wasp spray. The foam type wasp would be a better choice to apply so the workers wasps get covered coming and going to the nest. Apply early in early morning when the wasp are chilled. The killing frosts should also end the colony soon too.
