Weed with large Round Spiky/spiny balls #776086

Asked October 21, 2021, 6:42 PM EDT

My husband found a new guest in our back yard during fall cleanup.  it's a weed that has two large spiny balls on it. Doesn't look like Jimson Weed or Thistle?  The spines vary in size, up to around 1/2" on the larger ball that's about an inch in circumference.  We pulled it as it appears dangerous to pets and people.  Thank you in advance!  Picture attached.

Expert Response

Hello Lisa,

I apologize for the delay. The plant your husband found is called Detura. A common weed/annual desirable plant used in moon gardens, low water use landscapes.

I have attached an information sheet for you to see the flower and some information on the plant. The University has several plants in a median island of native and low water use on Valley Road in front of the Greenhouse complex.
