Help with Developing a Garden (food or flowers?) #775838

Asked October 19, 2021, 4:13 PM EDT

We have a green space between the old and newer sections of our church. Gets great sun. Grows great weeds! Need some advice on whether this would be good space for flowers and some sort of meditation space or a food source, perhaps growing herbs and a few vegetables. My pdf files would not upload.

I hope you will be able to upload this file .If not I can send it to you as part of a response.

To highlight some of the concerns about planting in your small green space, you must first find out what kind of soil you have. This will require a soil test, perhaps from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the soil test lab.

The samples from your space will tell you a lot about what you can grow, or not.  The amount of sunlight is another big question. If you observe several times during the day you can create a map of how much sun falls there and for how long. Vegetables generally need six hours of sun. There are many shrubs and other plants, for example perennials, that can tolerate less sun.

Next would be drainage and water sources. Does water stand after a rain? Might you need to raise the level of the soil or use containers?  How close and available is the hose?

After you have answered all of these questions you would be able to make a plan, decide what you will grow, add soil amendments, etc.

If you can get soil tested now then you might get a head start on spring planting. You can add shredded leaves and non chemical contaminated grass to improve the soil.

At some point please get back to us if you wish to evaluate what to plant.

I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you cannot open the link. If you look online for information always add “extension” or “edu” to your word search for reliable university based information.
