Squirrel - resistant spring bulbs in Colorado #775835

Asked October 19, 2021, 3:29 PM EDT

Two years ago, I planted tulips in my back yard and watched in horror as the squirrels dug them up and ate them. Are daffodils or crocus less tasty? Is there something that annoys squirrels enough to leave them alone?

Expert Response

Daffodils may be less tasty. They are less tasty for other animals. You can treat the area where you plant your bulbs with chili powder, capsaicin or Thiram. Capsaicin is the hot ingredient in chili's so it is similair to chili powder. Thiram, has a poor taste, but it may be less effective for squirrels. Any ingredient you put on the ground will have to be replaced every few days or if it gets wet. Squirrels do not like hot spices on their nose. The effectiveness of deterrents is questionable around squirrels.
Other ideas include, putting hardware cloth or chicken wire over the area you put the bulbs, trap and remove the squirrels. I am including information on managing squirrels from the University of California. It may give you ideas that will work for you.
