Magnolia Bush #775823

Asked October 19, 2021, 2:15 PM EDT

I live in Southern pine county. My magnolia bush doesn't flower in the spring. It grows leaves and then starts to bloom in Sept. I have only had it 3 years. Did not bloom first year, one bloom 2nd year. This year I have a dozen buds, but it is late October. Too small they won't bloom. How do I get it to bloom in spring?

Pine County Minnesota

Expert Response

Those buds are exactly where they should be now.  The strange weather we had this past year did confuse some plants.  My magnolia had a few blooms also last fall but the full bloom was in the spring.  Rabbits love to eat those flower buds so I suggest you fence it off or there will be no buds to open next spring.

Thank you for your reply. So, next spring will there be blooms before the leaves grow?

Yes, magnolias bloom early before they leaf out.  The older and bigger they get, the more blooms.  Allow plenty of room for it to grow.
