Asked October 19, 2021, 12:31 PM EDT

A) What variety is this red leaf tree? B) Is it planted too close to utilities and/or home? C) During construction there were many flags of various colors in the surrounding front yard. As it grows, should I be concerned about roots causing potential problems with all that is going on underground? Thank you and have a good day. D) Are there potentially trimming or other problems to be aware of?

Carver County Minnesota

Expert Response

a) This is a maple cultivar like a cultivar of Acer rubrum, the red maple

b) From the photos, it appears to be located just fine on your property.

c) From what I can see, you shouldn't have to worry. Flags indicate utilities below ground - electrical, cable, internet, water. Tree roots grow in the top 18-20" of soil. Water pipes and sewer pipes are located below the frost line (60"+) so they won't freeze, so not issues there. The tree roots will not interfere with the electrical, cable or internet lines either. However, if you are at all still concerned, contact your utility companies to come out and locate the lines / cables and let you know of any issues.

d) I cannot see enough of the tree to determine if there are any potential trimming issues / form issues. It is best to hire a certified arborist to assess any trees you are concerned about.
