Do I need to cut back my peonies for winter? #775797

Asked October 19, 2021, 12:03 PM EDT

I am wondering if I need to cut back my peonies to the ground for winter and mulch over them? They are young bushes, no more than 2ft high and the leaves are looking dead.

Alamosa County Colorado

Expert Response

Yes, herbaceous Peonies benefit from being cut to the ground once the foliage has died, usually with the first frost. An organic mulch of chopped leaves or grass clippings helps keep the area free of weeds and preserves some moisture.
