Family Farm Succession #775781

Asked October 19, 2021, 7:06 AM EDT

Hello, I’m looking for information about planning for the future of a multi-generational farm. So much has changed since the farm was handed down last and I’m looking for a resource that could help with the transition and financial/legal issues. PennState Extension has an online course about this (https://extension.psu.edu/business-transitions-family-farm-and-business-succession-planning) but it has State specific advice. I was wondering if MSU Extension has any resources that are similar for Michigan. Any other help would be appreciated also. Thank you.

Hi Emily,

We have some resources available on our Farm Management website: Succession & Estate Planning - Farm Management (msu.edu)

Additionally, I notice you're in Kalamazoo and that's one of the counties that I cover as a Farm Business Management educator.  I would be happy to schedule some time to work with you and your family to talk through succession planning questions you have.  My email is <personal data hidden>.

There's also an event coming up in Ottawa county through MIFarmLink called Cultivating Connections that is all about Succession Planning.  The link to that event page is here: Events - MI FarmLink

Hi Jon,

Thank you so much for the resources! I will bring all of this to my Uncles and husband. I’m sure we will be in touch to set up a call or a meeting.
