Weeping eastern redbud transplant #775771

Asked October 18, 2021, 9:28 PM EDT

Hello, I have someone willing to give me a weeping eastern redbud sapling but I don’t move into my new house until mid November. Would it be okay to plant the sapling outside at that time or should I pot it up and keep in my basement until spring? Thanks for any help!

Expert Response

Hello,

Normally, Fall is a good season to plant trees. But, a sapling planted in the middle of November may not have enough time to establish its roots before the soil temperature drops too low. It might be best to pot up the tree and keep it protected until the early Spring.

I have found several articles that may help you with your decision. The second link below discusses how to overwinter the tree in order to protect it. There are a few options for doing this. Please read these articles and write back if you you should have more questions.

Thanks for asking Ask Extension.
