Spotted Lantern Fly #775683

Asked October 18, 2021, 11:39 AM EDT

This summer have been seeing spotted lantern flies on our property. Today when I was cleaning up around the trees near chicken coop I noticed that the trunks and branches of some of the trees are covered with the spotted lantern fly. What is our courseof action?

Harford County Maryland

Expert Response

There isn't much you can do to eliminate them, unfortunately, though you still can report them to the MDA and try some of the courses of action listed on this page: https://extension.umd.edu/resource/spotted-lanternfly-management-residents

While MDA is aware of their presence in Harford County, they still do encourage reporting of sightings. The insects should not cause significant damage to the trees, fortunately. We don't know if the chickens can/will eat them, given the opportunity...they do consume other garden pests when offered the chance, at least.
