Baby blue dwarf sawara cypress #775615

Asked October 17, 2021, 5:13 PM EDT

Hello, I live in Eugene, and this little tree is about 4 years old, planted in good sun, fertilized and irrigated. This year, for the first time, it is developing a lot of brown branches, mostly inside the plant but extensive enough to be showing. Do you have a recommendation? Thanks for any ideas!

From just pictures it is difficult to tell what might be affecting your tree. There are diseases, insects, or even environmental factors that can cause browning of branches and foliage.

Canker disease turns old foliage yellow and brown and often has oozing from places in bark. It appears after it rains. See Cypress - Canker. Root rots are usually found in the soil and there are several pathogens which after affecting the roots cause the foliage to lose color, brown and eventually die. See Cypress - Root Rot for more information.

Cypress trees are not known for many insect problems, but diseased trees are more suspectable to insect infestations and damage. Spider mites, scale and aphids are possibilities. Information on cypress pests can be found at this website Pests in Gardens and Landscapes - Cypress.

Wind or sun damage or too much or too little water are just a couple of the environmental factors that could also be affecting your tree. The publication Why Are My Trees Dying? has more weather conditions that may harm the health of trees.
