My Hinoki Cypress is showing stress this fall 2021 #775590

Asked October 17, 2021, 1:36 PM EDT

This Hinoki Cypress was planted in 2018. This Fall 2021 it is showing stress. Please tell me how to correct this stress (lots of browning of branches and pod growth?) During the summer water drip system provides water to the roots of this plant. Planted near this plant is three other Hinoki Cypress of similar size and similar location (soil type and drip water system). They are not exhibiting the similar stress. Thank you for your assistance. Ronald Dobyns 15840 SW Snowy Owl Lane Beaverton, Oregon 97007 503.791.6144

Expert Response

Sorry to hear about your struggling Hinoki Cypress.

Please supply a bit of history of the trees and their management, including the following:
- When were the trees planted?
- What size were they at planting time? (Either the height or the container size.)
- When did the affected Hinoki begin to show browning? (i.e.: Approximate date.)
- Does the affected Hinoki receive the same number of hours of sunlight daily as the others? If not, how do they differ?
- Please describe anything else you think may be important.

Then, too, please describe the details of the drip system, its placement and use, including the following:
  • How often were the Hiknoki watered during the dry months?
  • Describe the layout of the drip system for each Hinoki; include (1) the number of drippers, (2) the distance from the trunk; and (3) the output of each dripper (e.g.: gallons per hour).
  • How often was the system run?
  • How long was the drip system run each time?
  • How deep does the moisture penetrate into the soil? (Do you check with a trowel, etc.?)

Is it possible to send an image with all of the Hinoki Cypress in a row? If yes, please do.

(I realize the above asks for a lot of info. You may want to copy and paste the questions, then insert your responses where appropriate.)

I look forward to receiving your responses to the above questions and an additional image or two.
