Yellow Jacket nest torn up #774816

Asked October 09, 2021, 6:07 PM EDT

I live outside Stayton, towards Lyons. We have a lot of yellow jackets around here which (after 46 years) I have pretty well taken care of. However, because of the summer heat, I didn't get down to clean out my drainage ditch along my property. Apparently a queen installed a nest into the side of the ditch under one of my rose bushes. When I was down there today, I noticed a bunch of nest layers lying in the ditch....and a large hole about 8-10 inches deep and about 8 inches across. Rocks, dirt, nest materials all laying in my ditch---along with a queen, which I promptly dispatched. I don't know of any critter around here that would have torn out a nest like that. I have possom, fox, raccoon, weasel, cougar that I know of. I just wonder what might have done that.

Expert Response

Good observation! Raccoons, skunks and bears all dig up yellowjacket nests to eat the larvae. It's hard to tell which one of these animals did it in this case!

Chris

Definitely not a bear, but we sure have skunk and raccoon.  I knew there wouldn't be honey in yellow jacket nest...never even thought of eating larvae.  Thank you.
