Identify unwanted grass #774581

Asked October 07, 2021, 7:33 PM EDT

Hi. Doing a lawn renovation starting from bare ground using quality 90/10 TTTF/PR with 0% weeds and other crops about 3 weeks ago. Applied tenacity at seeding. The new grass is coming in great. But I also have this stuff popping up widespread across the entire 6000sqft renovation area. It seems to grow faster than the rest of the grass. Seemingly appeared in the last few days. Can you identify what it is and the best way to terminate it's existence?

Expert Response

This looks like it might be wheat grass. We can see the remnants of the grain seeds at the base of these plants. Did you use straw to cover the renovated area after you planted? It is possible that there was wheat straw in there with some seeds remaining. These plants will die down eventually when the grass is mowed.

Yes I used winter wheat straw bales from my neighbor's farm. They get a lot of seed out the back of the combine with the chaff to keep the grain tank clean, and get practically an entire crop of volunteer wheat in the field after. I was hoping that would be your suggestion too since it will just die on its own.  I thought maybe some kind of nutsedge but that would be oddly widespread. And quack grass would be my nightmare since there's nothing selective for it.
