Oak Wilt Treatment Cost Assistance #774404

Asked October 06, 2021, 1:32 PM EDT

Hello! We love our backyard oak trees but just learned that oak wilt inoculation will cost us $4000! This may be cost prohibitive for us, are there organizations that offer scholarships or grants for this service? It seems like a community issue, yet many families will not be able to meet these costs. Thank you!

Grand Traverse County Michigan

Expert Response

Hello Isabel

No, there are no grants or financial assistance for chemical treatments on most private property. There might be limited assistance depending on what county you live in —the Forestry Assistance Program MIGHT be able to offer some financial assistance with oak wilt remediation. Call your conservation district to find out if your county offers that. https://www.michigan.gov/mdard/0,4610,7-125-1599_28740-286087--,00.html

It is a stressful process for oaks to be injected, so you only want to do it if you are protecting trees that are in the vicinity of infected oak trees.

If you have oak wilt near your healthy trees consult a certified arborist immediately, one with a specialty in oak wilt management.

Your best defense is to follow the guide of not pruning or wounding oaks from when weather is warm enough for the picnic beetle to spread the fungi. In Michigan the highest risk period is about April 1 through July 15. The lowest risk period is when it is cold, from about November through March.

If any storm damage occurs or pruning must be done between April- October, immediately ( within 2-3 minutes when possible) seal the wound or pruning cut with latex house paint or tree wound paint.
