YOUR QUESTION #0044235:
Shieldback Katydid in Forest Park??
I've only lived in Forest Park for 5yrs, but it's developed a new sound at night this year (I'm sensitive to sounds). In my search for the source, I found a brown grasshopper looking insect, but couldn't catch it and my photos were blurry. I feared a Mormon grasshopper by first Googling. But then three days ago, I started seeing sluggish grasshopper like insects in the day that I haven't seen before. Photo attached. I haven't snagged a specimen, yet, but will when I see one next. I also have a recording of the sound from very close to the source, but cannot seem to include with this attachment portal. Googling from that photo brings me to a Shieldback Katydid... Which shouldn't be here, either for being extinct or on the wrong coast. ID, please? Should I/we be worried?Ask Extension offers one-to-one expert answers from Cooperative Extension/University staff and volunteers within participating Land-Grant institutions across the United States.

Hello,
We do have shieldback katydids in our region, they are a different species (Steindachner's shieldback- Neduba steindachneri) than those on the east coast.
