Is my oak tree dying? #773284

Asked September 27, 2021, 3:35 PM EDT

I have a large oak tree in the center of my front yard in Raleigh. I've been gone for four years. When I returned, it had several "growths" on the trunk. I'm afraid it is dying but want an expert opinion on its health before I cut it down. Is there anyone at Wake Extension that can help me make that decision? Is there a "test" I can conduct myself that will tell whether the tree is dying?

Expert Response

I am not an expert in identifying fungi, but yours look a lot like sulphur polyphore, a type of shelf fungus that could indicate more extensive internal damage.  I would suggest that you contact a certified arborist by searching for the International Society of Arborists.  Their website allows you to put in your zip code and find ones near you.  You could also send this photo to the NCSU Plant and Insect Disease Clinic.  Link below.  They will analyze photos free, but there is a charge if you send a sample in.  Extension master gardeners are not allowed to make house calls, so we can’t evaluate it in person.
