Lilac problems #773114

Asked September 26, 2021, 11:04 AM EDT

Our lilac appears to have some powdery mildew, and other leaves that are brown and splotchy. Some branches have gotten quite bare, and this has been going on since earlier in the summer. My husband cut off some large branches this weekend because he was worried they were diseased, after hearing there was a blight affecting lilacs in the area. Can you please give us any idea what’s going on with our lilac, and if it’s necessary to aggressively prune it? How to we treat whatever is going on? We also noticed the center of the branches that he cut off are dark in the center of the branch. Is this normal? Thank you! Dana in Minneapolis

Expert Response

Hi,

Our lilacs have been hit with several diseases for a couple of years. This article explains the possibilities: https://extension.umn.edu/yard-and-garden-news/lilac-issues-season

Because many of these diseases present the same, you can get a specific diagnosis by sending a sample to the U’s Plant Disease Clinic: https://pdc.umn.edu/

I strongly advise you go that route, especially if the trees are important to you.

Thank you for your inquiry and good luck! Replied September 27, 2021, 5:31 PM EDT
